SYNOPSIS

Dane, a driver for a humanitarian NGO in N’Djamena, leads a peaceful life with his young wife Delphine, who is eight months pregnant. Like every day, Dane drives his 4x4 through the city’s busy streets. A moment of inattention, a phone ringing at the wrong time, a boy crossing the road too quickly… and the accident happens.

After a confusing situation at the hospital, he is told that the young boy has died. The victim’s family demands compensation and asks for “the Dia,” the price of blood—equivalent to eight thousand euros. While Dane is imprisoned for manslaughter, the boy’s village community pools its resources to gather the money, but they are unable to cover the full amount of the debt.

Upon his release from prison, Dane finds himself unemployed. Delphine is soon due to give birth, and the couple is forced to sell their belongings to pay the remaining balance of the Dia. Delphine urges Dane to find a new job. But he, consumed by guilt, can think of only one thing: making amends for his mistake.

His quest to pay the Dia leads him to the desert in northern Chad. There, in the vastness of the landscape, Dane discovers the truth about the event that turned his life upside down.
