SYNOPSIS
“Pope Paul VI granted me an audience in 1970, at the request of Archbishop Maury of Reims, where I had the opportunity to present him with the song ‘Amen No. 1.’ He then offered his thanks and strong encouragement to continue on the same path.” — John Littleton
John Littleton (1922–1998) was an American-born tenor and gospel singer who became a celebrated figure in France. Raised in Louisiana, he trained as an opera singer before dedicating his career to Black gospel music. Through his powerful performances and recordings, he introduced generations of European audiences to the richness and spiritual depth of Black American sacred music.
A bridge between sacred music, culture, and humanity — a vision that continues today under Pope Leo XIV.
Today, Pope Leo XIV elevates cinema as a spiritual art, urging storytellers to champion hope, truth, and human dignity through their work. His message resonates deeply with the enduring legacy of artists who have used music and film as instruments of faith, culture, and unity.
