SYNOPSIS

When disco died. They rhythm lived.

In 1982 Chicago, Jason’s rise in the underground music scene is defined by a bitter rivalry with Stephan, the spiteful manager of the Sheba Club. While Jason finds inspiration in a budding, cross-town romance with Britney—a law student whose "bougie" Northside world contrasts sharply with his Southside roots—his professional life becomes a battlefield. The tension with Stephan explodes after Michael bypasses the manager to secure Jason a live audition, sparking a vendetta rooted in professional jealousy. Once Jason is hired, Stephan’s resentment turns into active warfare; he orchestrates a campaign of technical sabotage, unplugging power during peak sets and damaging Jason’s equipment to make him appear unreliable. This hostility reaches a breaking point when Stephan fires the duo on a whim, leading to a physical brawl that leaves Stephan unconscious and Jason blacklisted from the scene.

The conflict shifts to the streets as Stephan launches a vicious smear campaign, ensuring no reputable venue will hire them. This professional exile, coupled with the pressure of his mother’s disapproval, nearly drives Jason to quit music and pushes him to distance himself from Britney. However, the sabotage backfires when a mentor introduces Jason to electronic production (a TR 909 drum machine), leading to the creation of a chart-topping new sound. By bypassing the traditional gatekeepers to open their own nightclub, Jason and Michael render Stephan’s influence obsolete. The story concludes with Jason’s ultimate triumph over his rival’s gatekeeping, a success that finally allows him the stability to reconcile with Britney under the lights of his own club.
